Wireless Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) Coordination Initiative
Through the Wireless E9-1-1 Coordination Initiative, the FCC seeks to bring together relevant stakeholders to share experiences and devise strategies for expediting wireless E9-1-1 deployment.
The Initiative also follows up on the findings and recommendations contained in the Hatfield Report, which was delivered to the FCC in November 2002. Dale Hatfield, an independent expert and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Telecommunications at the University of Colorado at Boulder, was commissioned by the FCC to examine technical and operational issues affecting E9-1-1 deployment. Comments on the Report were filed in WT Docket No. 02-46.
The Initiative officially commenced with a meeting held at the FCC on April 29, 2003. The meeting focused on highlighting wireless E9-1-1 deployment success stories and addressing ongoing implementation issues such as Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) funding for necessary upgrades, wireless carrier implementation and prioritization, issues relating to the role of Local Exchange Carriers (LECs), and deployment challenges faced by rural carriers.
